Forum 9: Global Trade
Conference: Forum 9: Global Trade
Safeguarding Animal Health in Global Trade Volker Moennig, School of Veterinary Medicine Hannover, Germany Alejandro B. Thiermann, United States Department of Agriculture, Washington, DC The health status of the animal population plays an important role in the growing intricacy of world trade. Higher international standards of animal health are essential. Any reduction in these standards can lead to acute disturbances in trade traffic. In addition to international trade with livestock and animal products, growing tourist traffic all over the world represents a high-risk potential here. Goals of the scientific discourse
- Definition of the likelihood of controlling outbreaks of exotic animal diseases (List A, Office Internationale des Epizooties (OIE))
- Reaction to the spread of antibiotic resistance through international trade
- Reaction to the appearance and world-wide spread of "new" disease agents ("emerging diseases") and the re-emergence and spread of animal diseases once believed to have been under control ("reemerging diseases")
- Establishment and standardisation of high animal health status internationally
