General Info

Sustainable development is the global challenge for the next century formulated nearly a decade ago as Agenda 21, and this is the source of the theme of the first world exposition to be held in Germany June October 2000: "Humankind Technology Nature". In this context scientists from four institutions in northern Germany have formed the Research Consortium Sustainable Animal Production, and invite participation in a virtual conference from colleagues in all disciplines pertinent to the production of animals and food derived from animals, e.g. animal and food sciences, agriculture, veterinary medicine, biology, sociology, political science, agronomics, ecology and others. Join us in working to develop a global vision of modern intensive animal production that is grounded in scientific fact and committed to finding solutions for the world food crisis.
The goal of the scientific discourse is to define conditions for modern animal husbandry to avoid the errors and problems inherent in present systems, which seldom fulfil the conditions for sustainability. To be sustainable, animal production must be not only

  • economically viable and
  • commercially practicable,
    but also
  • environmentally sound,
  • satisfactory for consumer needs and expectations, and
  • able to safeguard animal health and welfare.

The conference officially began on October 1, 1999, when keynote articles on each of ten central topics were presented along with calls for abstracts, posters, full papers and other responses by E-mail. All submissions are subject to a peer review procedure, with notification of (conditional) acceptance to follow within four weeks.
