Livestock Farming and the Environment

Joerg Hartung, School of Veterinary Medicine Hannover, Germany
Christopher M. Wathes, Silsoe Research Institute, Bedford, England

Rationalisation forces created by the economic climate have led to a growing concentration of livestock enterprises in European regions such as Weser-Ems, west Flanders and the Po valley. The farming of large numbers of livestock within a small area in modern agriculture can cause substantial environmental stress (groundwater, soil, atmosphere).

Goals of the scientific discourse

  • Reducing emissions and pollution through all stages in the production of animal-source food
  • Design of food chains which are, as far as possible, self-contained on a local or regional basis, including the necessary plant production
  • Development and implementation of new technologies for the environmentally-friendly recycling of organic residues and refuse, especially within the major centres for animal farming and food processing
