Abstract

The Expandat is produced by means of an annular gap expander immediately after drying of the beet pulp. The processing parameters such as moisture, temperature, pressure, and electromechanical energy input in the annular gap expander influence the physical characteristics and the nutritional value of the feed. Due to the porous structure very high molasses quantities can be added after drying. The bulk density is by abt. 100 % higher than that of bulk dried beet pulp. The structure and granular size correspond to that of other components of a TMR mixture, such as silage. The water absorption capacity of Expandat is 75 % higher than that of pellets or 50 % higher than that of bulk dried beet pulp. The swelling capacity of Expandat in water is 25 % higher than that of dried beet pulp and twice as high than that of pellets. The analyses according to the GPT method (Cumulative Gas Production Technique) show that expansion accelerates the fermentation of the material in the rumen in the initial phase after feeding.
